Is pulse the only way to access an exchange 2010 server thru the iphone?

clientless Activesync reverse proxy is not yet supported for exchange 2010 right?

The clientless ActiveSyncy proxy should work just fine with Exchange 2010. Are you seeing something different? I don’t believe you would want to use Pulse for e-mail access. It would work, of course. But that would mean that you would have to keep your VPN on 24×7, which few really want to do. The only time the Pulse client should be running is when you really need to access corporate applications sitting inside the data center.

Hi kevin… You have made my face light up with these screenshots and video.

I unfortunately are in the position where my Company’s exchange can only be accessed externally via the Juniper VPN as they wont support iPhone. So this is my only hope. As an iPhone developer i have been testing all of the 4.0 beta’s in anticipation hoping that your app would suddenly appear in one of the builds, but its good to see some actual images now of your progress.

Im happily sitting here if you wanna bounce me a developer preview!! ;) haha

Thanks for the response Kevin…. Dont know if you can speak much of it seeing it hasnt been released yet, but if you can then it would be great:

If the VPN was to be left open to hold a constant connection to the Exchange, any idea of the data usage that would be incurred? I guess an hourly figure would be good?

Im guessing however a constant vpn would be a big battery drainer? Or does it use a newly released API to enable this, thus reducing the overhead?

Stuart – You reallly don’t even need the Pulse client just to get e-mail. We have had a built-in ActiveSync proxy that will allow you to access corporate e-mail without any VPN client. See http://kevpeterson.com/?p=48 for a demo.

We use the ActiveSync proxy with iPhones at our organization (http://www.synercomm.com) and it’s worked very well. Of course iOS4 won’t send mail through it, but I’m hoping there’ll be a patch from Apple to fix that issue soon.

Looking forward to the Pulse client. Any idea what the release date on that’ll be?

  7. Bill C  •  Jun 24, 2010 @2:44 pm

When will the Junos Pulse App be available to the public via the app store or other distribution method?

  8. KevinPeterson  •  Jun 24, 2010 @3:14 pm

It will be available once the App approval process is completed by Apple. It shouldn’t be too long.

  9. KevinPeterson  •  Jun 24, 2010 @3:19 pm

You should definitley open a JTAC support ticket on that one. We support ActiveSync and not any specific phone, so if there is a problem there we definitely want to fix it. Our QA and technical marketing team has tested iOS4 successfully with ActiveSync (they even sent me some test messages to prove it was working for them), so if you are having a problem we need to know what might be different in your setup.

Hmmmmm. I had a look at that vid and tried my best to get it working but to no avail.

As I havent had much exposure to your VPN im a little confused how this would work.. We generally log into our vpn via a webpage that requires my username and a password, then once past that, and I click on email, I have to log in again with my username and windows password.. Unfortunately these two passwords are different for whatever reason, so I dont see how this would work..

Damn you had my hopes up then! ;)

  11. KevinPeterson  •  Jun 24, 2010 @7:30 pm

Stuart – You can use the Admin Guide (chapter 45) for detailed instructions on how to configure the ActiveSync proxy feature. A connected user will not have to go to the standard web page to log on. In fact, no browser logon will even be used. It works as if the SSL VPN is not even there.

Could you please let me know on how to get 2003 exhange emails on my Iphone as my office doesn’t allow direct access to the email server, SSL Vpn should answer this , but i don’t know how to do it.

  21. RasKal  •  Jul 22, 2010 @1:06 pm

    Hello Kevin,
Upgraded a new SA6500 to IVE7 2 weeks ago, upgraded my iPhone 3GS today to IOS4… and no Junos Pulse on the store. If it’s not available by end July I will roll back my SA6500 to IVE6 and switch it to prod like the 2 other SA6500 I already have. I can’t wait any longer.
    Desperate…. I am!
    Cheers,
    //P

As long as you have ActiveSync up and running internally, you can just follow the instructions in the Admin Guide to configure the ActiveSync proxy feature on the SSL VPN. This will then proxy all of the external ActiveSync connections to the internal server. Plus you can further secure it by using the protocol validation option and/or client-side certificates.

    Hello Kevin,

Any update on the release in the appstore?

    Gr,

    Bernd.

  24. Milt  •  Jul 26, 2010 @7:34 pm

Is this app in the App Store Yet???

  25. KevinPeterson  •  Jul 26, 2010 @9:30 pm

    DanielSun,

I would be surprised if the Pulse client could not easily work with your solution. It should be out soon enough though, so hopefully you will be able to test it out very soon after Apple releases it.

  26. KevinPeterson  •  Jul 26, 2010 @9:31 pm

Sorry, Bernd. Nothing yet. We hope to share the good news soon though.

  27. Bryan P  •  Jul 27, 2010 @6:31 pm

Do you think this delay in approval and Juniper just acquiring SMobile shows that Pulse alone was not cutting it with the guys at Apple?

  28. Jens  •  Jul 28, 2010 @3:12 am

    Hello Kevin,
I found an option for configure Juniper SSL VPN in the IPhone Configuration Utility. Is this configuration for the Pule Client?

    KR, Jens

  29. KevinPeterson  •  Jul 29, 2010 @1:56 am

You bet it is! Thanks for reminding me. When I get a chance I will post some screen shots of that up here as well so that others can find it easy enough.
